With winter coming in fast, it’s important that car owners ensure their vehicles are ready for the impending cold weather. If you haven’t done so yet, here are a few ways to prepare your car for the winter season.
- Check your tire pressure
Colder weather can cause your tires to lose pressure rapidly. At least once a week, make sure you’re checking your car’s tire pressure to ensure it’s at the right level. Adequately filled tires are necessary for providing traction on slippery roads.
- Take a look at the belts and hoses
Colder weather can also cause hoses and belts in your engine to crack or break. Always assess these parts of your engine or have them inspected before it gets too cold. If you notice that they look cracked or faded, it’s wise to have them replaced as soon as possible.
- Monitor your battery
Your battery can start to corrode in the winter, particularly around its terminals. You’ll want to look closely for any signs of corrosion, especially if your battery is over three years old. It’s also a good idea to bring your car into the service center to have the battery tested to confirm it can hold a charge. Nobody wants to be stuck in the middle of a snowstorm with a dead battery.
- Check the oil
Oil can become thicker in colder weather, and when it’s too thick, it can’t properly lubricate your engine. Consider bringing your car in for an oil change, and while you’re at it, make sure you’re getting oil of the right viscosity to handle the temperature drop.
- Replace your windshield wipers
If it’s been a while since you replaced your windshield wipers, now is the time to do it. Snow and sleet can severely impair your vision when they accumulate on your windshield, so you’ll want wipers that can get the job done. Also check your windshield washer fluid reservoir to see if it’s filled.
